THE EXAMINER ... Bidding war ensures quirky Tasmanian property fetches $500k over reserve By Hamish Geale May 5 2026 - 4:00pm

A retired police station in a charming Tasmanian village has proved hot property at auction.

The former Evandale police station and accompanying four-bedroom cottage at 3 Scone Street went under the hammer to much fanfare on Saturday.

Bidding started at $550,000 and quickly surpassed price expectations.

After about 20 bids, one of the four bidders - all Tasmanians - secured the property for $1.15 million.

"It was outstanding. There would have been about 50 people there," Wolf Property's Riley Turner said.

"We were expecting it to sell somewhere in the $700,000s ... we were pretty impressed with how it ended up going.

"It ended up selling about $500,000 above the reserve."

The property, located just down the road from the Clarendon Arms, dates back to 1920 and had never previously been sold.

It had been owned by the Tasmanian Government, and had operated as a police station until about five years ago.

The property's new owners are still weighing up what to do with it.

"They haven't completely decided on what they're looking at doing - they're potentially looking at [a] rezoning and turning it into the residential side of things," Mr Turner said.

"But they are exploring maybe running a GP or that side of things, as well and utilising the community purpose [zoning] of it all. It'll be exciting to see what they do with it."

The sale capped off a strong weekend for auctions in the North.

One day earlier, Elders Launceston sold a 15.54 hectare property on the fringes of Norwood.

Bidding started at $800,000 for the rural-zoned block at 20 Pegema Place, which attracted interest both as a lifestyle block and as a medium-term residential rezoning opportunity.

Three bidders traded 26 bids before the property sold for $1,425,000.

Sales agent Doug Marshall couldn't comment on what the buyer planned to do with the property, which was listed as a mortgagee in possession sale, but said the block offered ample opportunities.

"While there will probably be some future hurdles to development, remaining parcels like that are few and far between," he said.

"In time I'm sure that'll be seen as a good purchase."
